From now through Thursday, shoppers can buy toys for poor children by choosing tags from the mall’s Helping Hands tree. The nearly 1,600 employees of the mall also will hold a food drive today and Tuesday in hopes of filling food baskets. Both efforts are aimed at making up for a sudden shortfall of food and toys for some 400 low-income families. Salvation Army officials announced last week that demand had more than doubled and that the agency expects to provide Christmas supplies for nearly 900 families starting Tuesday. The Helping Hands tree provides toys for children under the care of the Oregon Department of Human Services, including those helped by the local Foster Parents Association. Salvation Army officials have added more names to the tree, which is located near the Santa-visiting area in the mall. Shoppers can select a tag, fill the request and return the unwrapped gift to the mall’s customer service center by Dec. 23. Employees have been encouraged to bring donations of canned goods and other nonperishable foods to the mall’s management office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. today and Tuesday. They’ll be delivered in time for Salvation Army workers to create and deliver holiday food baskets. For more information, contact Jill Ditty, the mall’s group marketing manager, at 776-3255.
