Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 24, 2005 Six Medford residents spend night in snow Two Medford adults and four kids spent Sunday night in a Honda Civic stuck in the Northern California snow before searchers rescued them Monday morning, authorities said. The six were cold and hungry but otherwise fine when Jackson County Search and Rescue volunteers discovered the group on a mountain high in the southern Applegate River drainage in California, just south of Applegate Lake. Lisa Corbin, 37, and Jeremy Branckley, 38, left Medford at about noon Sunday, bound for a picnic with Corbin’s children, who are 15, 13, 12 and 4, said Sgt. Pat Rowland from the Sheriff’s Department search and rescue team. They planned to return about 6 p.m., but friends called the sheriff’s department to report them missing at 10:30 p.m., deputies said. Sheriff’s deputies searched the area for a few hours Sunday night before calling in the search and rescue volunteers, Rowland said. At dawn, about two dozen volunteers began searching the area, Rowland said. At 10:05 a.m., volunteers found them in the car stuck in snow about 12 miles up Forest Service Road No. 1035, Rowland said. The stranded picnickers had coats and very little food, Rowland said. But they had enough gasoline to use the car’s heater for warmth, he said. The Northern California area south of Applegate Lake is very remote and often best accessed from the Oregon side of the border.
