North triumphs in overtime, 2-0 North Medford might have been suffering the effects of playing its fifth game in seven days or Roseburg�s defensive strategy might have hampered the Black Tornado in Southern Oregon Conference boys soccer Tuesday. Regardless, it was a struggle for North. But after a scoreless regulation, the Black Tornado scored once in each of the two 10-minute overtime periods and came away with a 2-0 victory at Varsity Field. "The boys are dog-tired right now," said North Medford coach Rich Garcia. "You can tell our finishing lacked. We totally dominated the game. We just about played them off the field." North Medford outshot the Indians 17-3 and Garcia estimates his goalie, Jon Cotta, only touched the ball three or four times in the game. The Black Tornado finally scored about seven minutes into the first overtime on a goal by freshman forward Babak Asgharian from six yards out off a pass from Scott Jolly. North sealed the win on Ben Barringer�s goal with about two minutes to go in the second overtime. SOUTH MEDFORD 2, GRANTS PASS 0 � At Fichtner-Mainwaring Park, South Medford scored twice in the first half then relied on its defense in the second half. A collision in the box in the 15th minute of the contest resulted in a penalty kick by South�s Josh Neville for a 1-0 advantage. A Grants Pass defender miskicked the ball trying the clear it to his goalie with four minutes left in the half, sending the ball into the net for an own goal. South outshot the visitors 8-4 and led in corner kicks, 6-2. Paced by sweeper Craig Tomlins and defenders Adam Walport, Cody George and Corey Parks, South registered its third shutout. KLAMATH UNION 2, ASHLAND 1 � At Klamath Falls, defending SOC champion Ashland fell in its conference opener as Klamath Union made two first-half goals stand. The Pelicans scored in the 31st minute when Krister Balme and the Grizzlies� Jacob VanAusdall battled for the ball at the top of the box. The ball glanced off VanAusdall�s foot and bounced over goal keeper Noah Shield�s head. One minute later, the Pels were back in business when Alex Casey headed in a corner kick for a 2-0 lead. Ashland scored in the second half when Scott Beaver drew off goalkeeper Dan Read then fed Jasper Katz for an uncontested goal. CRATER 7, EAGLE POINT 1 � At Central Point, Todd Sesock had two second-half goals to propel the Comets to a win over Eagle Point. With the Comets holding onto a 2-0 halftime lead, Sesock scored his first goal six minutes into the second half. His second goal came four minutes later. Crater (3-5, 1-0 SOC) dominated with 32 shots on goal to Eagle Point�s four. PHOENIX 8, BROOKINGS 0 � At Phoenix, Josh Hendricks scored four goals and Phoenix�s defense held Brookings to just one shot on the day as the Pirates breezed to the non-conference victory. Phoenix, which improved its record to 4-1, had 20 shots on goal. ST. MARY�S 1, NORTH VALLEY 0 � At Merlin, Matt Burt scored the game�s only goal 18 minutes into the first half as St. Mary�s improved to 3-0 in non-league action. Burt volleyed in a cross from Zack Rote from about six yards out. Sweeper Jordan Frankel and Brian Staver played well defensively as goalkeeper Greg Gradwell recorded his third shutout.
