Jockey Scriver, record handle highlight closing day at GPD By Mail Tribune staff Nov 11, 2020 09:16 AM A A GRANTS PASS — Grants Pass Downs and leading jockey Joree Scriver went out with a bang on Tuesday, the track ending its 16-day fall season with a record-shattering handle and the rider posting four victories to finish atop the standings. The meet, originally scheduled for 18 days before wildfires and smoke forced the cancellation of two days, closed this week with two 12-race cards, and that led to a surge in wagering. The total handle of $868,632 Tuesday smashed the previous high of $497,243 Monday. Scriver’s four wins — in the fourth, eighth, 10th and 12th races — upped her total to 21 for the meet, four more than runner-up Jose Figueroa. Quinn Howey topped all trainers with 12 victories, and Jorge Rosales was second with nine. Figueroa was the top quarter horse jockey with seven firsts and Scott Raley the leading sprint trainer with five. For thoroughbreds, Scriver’s 15 wins led the way, as did Howey’s 12 among trainers. Jockey Cerapio Figueroa notched two wins, including the Josephine County Juvenile for 2-year-olds aboard Lozlovian. Eliska Kubinova, who also owns the colt, earned her first triumph as a trainer in the 6 1/2-furlong race with a purse of $13,700. The other feature race was the 1 1/8-mile Grants Pass Mile Stakes with a $20,000 purse. Pulpits Power, ridden by Scriver and trained by Billy Christian, captured the meet’s finale by three-quarters of a length over Beat the Heat.
