Ashland ends North Medford's winning ways ASHLAND - Ashland is proving to be North Medford's nemesis in boys tennis. The Grizzlies, who were the last SOC team to defeat the Black Tornado, ended North Medford's Southern Oregon Conference 15-match winning streak Thursday at Hunter Park. The Grizzlies used three of five wins in singles and split four doubles matches to register a 5-4 victory. North Medford (7-1-1, 6-1 SOC) had defeated Ashland 6-3 earlier this season. "It came down to No. 1 doubles," Ashland coach Dick Streng said. "We took advantage of our home-court advantage. We knew the wind." Ashland's top doubles team of Kevin Spears and Evan Schleining took the first set from Andrew Theen and David Mostue, 6-3. But the North team answered with a 6-3 win to force a third set. Spears and Schleining capitalized on an early break to win the decisive set 6-2. "Evan volleyed extremely well," said Streng. "That early break helped us emotionally." North Medford sophomore Tyler Wilson remained undefeated in No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over junior Ari Zaslow. "On the big points, he (Wilson) didn't make an error," said Streng. "A couple of times Ari tired to make too fine shot." North Medford undefeated singles player John Falath, a foreign student from Slovakia, did not play in the match. SINGLES - Tyler Wilson, NM, d.
