It also welcomed its first win. North’s Ben Running scored 14 points in his initial game after the football season as the Black Tornado slipped past Bend, 48-42, at North. The Tornado gave up 23 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over 21 times, but it held Bend to 14-of-58 field shooting in the nonconference tilt. "(The offensive rebounds) definitely kept them in the game, but we did a really good job of defending," said North coach Tim Sam. "We worked very hard at making them take tough shots." Advertisement Ryan Lucas added 13 points for North (1-3), which hosts Mountain View at 2:45 p.m. today. The Tornado benefited from a 10-2 burst to start the game. The comfortable lead was short-lived, however, as Bend rallied for a 21-18 lead at halftime. North jumped into the lead to start the third period. A Bend 3-pointer tied the game momentarily, but a 5-0 spurt put the Tornado in front for good. North also got Drew Herrera, Kyle Williamson and David Faaeteete from the football team but will be without guard Beau Hovland for a couple more weeks due to an ankle sprain. "(The first win) is something to build on," said Sam. "All the kids that have been involved have competed so well. It’s nice to have that extra push with the guys joining us. "Their experience will bring us to a whole different level." Running also grabbed six rebounds to go with five assists.
