The event begins today at Southern Oregon Tennis Club and runs through Sunday. Today’s matches start at 2 p.m. The men’s and women’s open singles finals are at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. There are 107 players entered in the event, which includes men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Kauffman, a top Northwest singles player, is helping to run the tournament and will concentrate on doubles. He’ll team with Derrick Kleiner of Central Point, and their first match is at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Advertisement Chaney, a former North Medford standout and now the No. 1 player for Southern Oregon University, won the title last year over Grants Pass’ Ruth Lopez, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Chaney is the No. 1 seed this year. The No. 2 seed is Michelle Jordan, an SOU freshman player from Grants Pass who will play North Medford senior McKenzie Hilmer at 5 p.m. today. In other women’s open matches of note, North Medford junior Lauren Wilson faces Danielle Farber, an SOU sophomore, at 5 p.m. today, and SOU junior Nicole Nakama plays St. Mary’s eighth- grader Casey Schein, who lives in Ashland, at 5 p.m. today. In men’s open play, Chad Wilson will not return to defend his title. Instead, the No. 1 seed is Trevor Gamble of Ashland, a 6-foot-5 former Whitman College (Walla Walla, Wash.) player reputed to have a big serve. Aaron Keiley, who plays for Redmond High’s team, is the No. 2 seed. He faces Kleiner at 11 a.m. Saturday. North Medford sophomore Nick Millan takes on Guy Tauer of Medford in a 5 p.m. match today. The open divisions, with $1,000 in prize money, is a U.S. Tennis Association-sanctioned event. The club is located at 2700 Hillcrest in Medford, next to the Rogue Valley Country Club. In addition to the open divisions, there will be two skill-level divisions for ratings of 3.5 and 4.0. For specific match times or more information, call 773-4552.
