Roseburg pitchers Brandt Pedersen and Ryan Robinson retired 28 straight Mustangs’ batters over two games during a doubleheader sweep by the Dr. Stewart’s at Legion Field. Once Roseburg (34-14, 17-3 Area 4) won the opener 5-2, the Mustangs hopes for a tie for the Area 4 title and the league’s No. 1 seed in the state playoffs came to an end. Then the Docs won the nightcap 7-0 behind Ryan Robinson’s one-hit shutout. It was the first time the Mustangs had been blanked since the 2002 American Legion World Series. Advertisement Pedersen retired the final 14 batters in the first game, including seven by strikeout. The left-hander from Glide High finished with nine strikeouts in the opener. Chad Hegdahl led the Mustangs with two hits and scored one run. Robinson set down the first 14 batters in Game 2 before Logan Boyd broke up the no hitter with a line-drive single to right with two out in the fifth. Then Robinson retired the next seven consecutive batters. Medford (28-13, 13-7 Area 4), which already had second place secured, will open the state playoffs Thursday. The Mustangs’ playoff opponent and location won’t be known until Monday. EUGENE CHALLENGERS 11, CENTRAL POINT COMETS 1 — At Eugene, Michael Ward pitched six innings of five-hit ball as Eugene clinched the No. 2 seed out of Area 4 with a convincing win over Central Point. The Challengers travel to the American Legion A state tournament in John Day on Friday. Klamath Falls is the top seed from Area 4. Eugene scored five runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead and ended the game due to the 10-run mercy rule with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Schmidt provided the Comets with their only score — a solo home run in Central Point’s final at-bat. Josh Surgeon had two hits to lead the Comets, who finished the season 22-15. Babe Ruth 15-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Coos Bay, Umpqua Valley handed Medford its first tournament loss, 7-6, then Medford stayed alive in the double-elimination event with a 6-4 victory over Roseburg. Medford faces host Coos Bay at 3 p.m. today in an elimination game. Shane Fuller pitched 31/3 innings of shutout relief for Medford against Umpqua Valley. Taylor Comford led the Medford offense with two hits, including a double and one RBI. Joe Cruz had a double and three RBIs and Zach Robinson reached base four times and scored three runs. Robinson pitched a seven-inning complete game against Roseburg. Robinson struck out nine and allowed nine hits. Medford built a 6-1 lead after four innings. For Medford, Trenton Smith went 1-for-1, got hit by a pitch, walked twice and scored two runs, while Sean Severson scored twice. 14-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Eagle Point, Medford notched two wins to move into today’s championship round of the double-elimination tournament. Andy Robinson and A.J. Palazzolo each went 3-for-4 as Medford defeated Umpqua Valley, 8-6, in the first game of the day. Medford then held off Upper Rogue, 6-5, to advance to today’s game against Phoenix-Talent at noon. Medford (4-1) must win the opening game to force a 3 p.m. contest, while Phoenix-Talent needs just one win to claim the state title. In the opening game on Saturday, Griffin Boyd and D.J. Titus drove in two runs apiece and Jonny Adamson recorded the pitching win, while Jason Sorenson picked up the save. Against Upper Rogue, Boyd went 2-for-3 with two runs and Anthony Emerson had two hits. Upper Rogue scored four runs in the second inning when Medford reliever Josh Camp entered and tossed five innings of shutout ball for the win. Anthony Grieve came on in relief in the seventh with nobody out and two runners and gave up one run before working out of the jam to get the save. The tournament winner advances to the regional tournament in The Dalles on Aug. 4. 13-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Oakland, undefeated Medford Red overcame an early deficit to post a 5-2 victory over Ashland in a semifinal game at the double-elimination tournament. Medford plays once-beaten Umpqua Valley, who defeated Ashland 12-11, today at 11 a.m. for the state championship. Chris Bradshaw gave up three hits in five shutout innings of relief for the pitching win. Ashland grabbed a 2-0 lead after the first inning but Medford started chipping away in the fourth. Issac Rolie had an RBI hit in the inning and Sam McLaughlin doubled home two runs in the fifth to give Medford the lead for good. Rolie finished with two of Medford’s seven hits, while Charlie Sebrell and Jordan Decker each had a pair of hits for Ashland. Little League Softball 13-14-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Portland, Grants Pass Americans bounced back from Thursday’s 13-7 loss to Redmond to post a 7-0 victory over Portland to avoid elimination. Grants Pass plays Klamath Falls at noon today at St. Aubin Field. Pitchers Destinee Hernandez and Angie Dangelo combined for a no-hitter against Portland. Both pitchers struck out six. Hernandez led the Grants Pass attack with two hits, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Also with two hits for Grants Pass were Rachel Conard, Shawlena Haga, Dangelo and Chauncie Porter. 9-10-YEAR-OLD STATE TOURNAMENT — At Roseburg, the Murphy twins, Renee and Kassi, helped Phoenix pin a 14-4 loss in five innings on Kenton of Portland in the opening game of pool play of the nine-team tournament. Renee Murphy pitched no-hitter and struck out 13. All of Kenton’s runs were unearned. Kassi Murphy went 2-for-3, scored two runs and drove in a run. Cassie Zimmer added to the Phoenix attack with three hits, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Phoenix plays Pendleton at 4 p.m. Monday.
