A pair of off-duty firefighters at an east Medford gym gave a collapsed man a literal jumpstart Wednesday and saved his life. Firefighters Tim Dundas and Jeff Matschke had been working out together at Court House Family Fitness Center on North Phoenix Road when a man on a treadmill suffered an apparent heart attack at about 12:55 p.m., according to Medford Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Melissa Cano. Dundas, who was working out on cardio equipment at the time, was first to respond, according to Cano. Dundas heard someone ask the man if he was OK as the man got off the treadmill and started to lay down. “He went over, checked for a pulse and he began CPR,” Cano said, adding that Dundas told a bystander to call 911 and fetch Matschke. The off-duty firefighters administered two shocks from an automated emergency defibrillator less than 5 minutes before rescuers arrived. A crew from Fire Station 6 was “right down the street,” Cano said. Paramedics with the fire department and Mercy Flights administered a third shock to the man, whose name was not released. “By the time they were getting him to the ambulance, he had a pulse,” Cano said. Mercy Flights took the man to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, and he is now recovering, according to Cano.
