Phoenix boys squeak past Honkers LAKEVIEW - Phoenix got hot when it counted most in Skyline Conference boys basketball Tuesday. The Pirates overcame a four-point deficit entering the final period and pulled out a 55-53 victory over Lakeview. Phoenix received big performances from a pair of sophomores - guard Mike Smith and wing Martin Gonzales. Smith scored 15 points to lead four Phoenix players in double figures and Gonzales tossed in 13. "Smith broke out tonight and had a good game for us," Phoenix coach Kevin Dixon said. "And Gonzales was very aggressive against their zone." Gonzales tallied eight points in the final period - including 4-for-4 on free throws - to help the Pirates erase as much as a six-point margin in the fourth quarter. Phoenix (6-9, 2-3 Skyline) scored 15 points on its last seven possessions in the game. The score was tied 50-50 with 1 minute, 53 seconds left before the Pirates scored five unanswered points. Lakeview hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. "In the fourth quarter we went to a zone and they just stopped scoring and tried to shoot from the outside," said Dixon. "We moved the ball around well and did a very good job in the last two minutes." PHOENIX (55) - Smith 15, Crockett 2, Barrett 0, Rhodes 11, Ellis 11, Lacy 3, Gonzales 13. Totals: 17 13-18 55.
