The National Weather Service in Medford predicts Monday's high could also set a record at 88, surpassing the previous high of 87 set in 1934. Summer-like weather is going to be short lived, though, with meteorologists predicting cooler weather through the week and possibly rain by Friday. The record today wasn’t the hottest temperature of the year. On April 7, the high at the Medford airport hit a toasty 91 degrees. On April 6, the high was 89 degrees. The April 7 record was also the earliest 90-degree day in Medford, beating the previous earliest 90-degree day on April 13, 1947. The latest is July 4, 1953, and the average date for the mercury to climb that high is May 24. Meterologist Charles Smith said air sinking from the upper atmosphere as it comes over the Siskiyou Mountains helped warm up the valley. “That’s the reason why Medford is often a hot spot,” he said. Temperatures should settle back down to 72 on Thursday, and then to 61 on Friday and Saturday as a weather front moves through, Smith said. Despite the lower temperatures for the weekend, Smith said we should experience higher-than-normal temperatures through much of the next two weeks. So far this rain season, 18.28 inches have fallen at the Medford airport, 3.16 inches above normal. Rainfall should be heavy in some areas along the coast starting this Friday but a little lighter in the Medford area. “It will not be a real soaker, but we should get some real rain,” Smith said.
