Coldiron, who said he’s resigning so he can be closer to his family, submitted his resignation to Ashland Principal Jeff Schlect on Monday. It’s effective at the end of the school year. "My parents just retired and bought a house near my sister in Washington," said Coldiron, who also teaches physical education at Ashland. "I am looking at maybe finding (a job) up there so I can spend more time with them. "Right now, nothing’s set in stone, but it’s something that I feel like I want to do." Ashland Athletic Director Karl Kemper says a search to fill the vacancy won’t begin until after the holidays. Advertisement "We’ll take our time and make sure we have the best replacement possible," said Kemper, who has already filled head coaching vacancies with the girls basketball and softball teams in his first year on the job. "We’d like to find someone to couple with a teaching position." Coldiron had big shoes to fill as the replacement for longtime Ashland coach Jim Nagel, who led the Grizzlies to seven Southern Oregon Conference championships and three state titles in 20 years. The 42-year-old Coldiron, who had short coaching stints at Pasadena City College (Calif.) and El Monte High in the San Gabriel Valley prior to going to Ashland, posted a 6-12 overall record and a 1-11 mark in the SOC in two seasons. The Grizzlies also failed to reach the state playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. But Kemper noticed the enthusiasm level rising at the school and amongst its players. "I’d say we definitely saw an increase in the number of kids out for football," said Kemper. "He did some good things here, and we thank him for that. "We want to wish him well and wish him luck. He’s definitely leaving a good foundation to work with for whoever steps in." The Grizzlies return two players who received honorable mention in SOC all-star voting. They are quarterback Sam Littleton and offensive tackle Jason LeFever. But Ashland will lose a number of all-SOC performers from the 2004 team, including first-team linebacker Morgan Mason, and second-teamers Jeff Skinner, Steve Jorgensen, Simon Weibel and Brian Kitchell.
