Last Thursday and Friday broke all-time highs for Medford, and the month of October has averaged 67 degrees, 8 degrees above normal “That’s definitely quite a bit,” said meteorologist Charles Smith with the National Weather Service in Medford. On Oct. 16, the high at the Medford airport was 87 degrees, breaking the previous record of 86 in 2007. Again, on Oct. 15, the high reached 92, putting some distance between the previous high of 89 set in 1991. A bit of rain fell on Saturday, but not enough to make any sizable dent in the rainfall totals. At the airport, only .03 inches of rain fell over the weekend, though some locations near Crater Lake saw up to one inch. “The Cascades saw a decent amount of rain,” Smith said. For the season, .28 inches of rain have fallen since the water year started in September, but most of that rainfall came last month. The average is about one inch of rain through the middle of October. The relatively dry fall so far comes after the National Weather Service declared this summer was the hottest on record. Smith said long-term climate predictions estimate this area has a slight chance of seeing less rain and higher temperatures through December. Weather watchers say this is an El Niño year, which typically brings strong Pacific storms and lots of rain to Southern California. However, climate models give this area only a 50-50 chance of more precipitation. With warmer weather expected, the precipitation is likely to bring less snow as well. Smith said a slight amount of rain could fall in the valley Monday.
