Local cities plan parades, fireworks on 4th The American flag won't be the only thing flying high on the Fourth of July. Streaking the skies throughout Jackson County will be F-15s by day, fireworks by night. Throw in a few parades, some rousing speeches and live music, and you've got enough Independence Day to keep any patriotic American proud. The fun actually begins today at 10 p.m., when Lake of the Woods shoots off fireworks. On Wednesday, a pair of F-15 Eagle jet fighters from the 173rd Fighter Wing at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls will fly over Ashland at 9:40 a.m., Central Point at 9:45 a.m. and Lake of the Woods at 9:50 a.m. Here are the other Fourth of July events: ASHLAND : The Ashland Elks will serve breakfast for $5 from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the rear of their lodge, 255 E. Main St.; a Fourth of July runs start at the library about 8:15 a.m.; and the parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at Triangle Park, moves down Siskiyou Boulevard to East Main and finishes at Water Street. Events at the bandshell in Lithia Park include Mayor Alan DeBoer's welcome address at 11:45 a.m., reading of the Declaration of Independence by Barry Kraft at noon, and musical and dance entertainment from 12:15 to 4 p.m. Vendor booths will be open in Lithia Park. The Native Plant Society of Oregon will host the Irene Hollenbeck Memorial Wildflower Show at Pioneer Hall, 73 Winburn Way, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free shuttle bus service will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The American Band College fireworks concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Ashland High School stadium. At 10 p.m., the final 25 minutes of music will be coordinated with Ashland's fireworks display, which can be heard on KCMX-FM, Lite 102. Concert tickets are $12, $10 seniors. Children under 12 get in free with an adult. Fireworks start at 10 p.m. CENTRAL POINT : The day begins with a Fire District 3 pancake breakfast served on the lawn behind City Hall. Breakfast hours are 6 to 10 a.m. The cost is $3.50 for adults, $3 for ages 5-12. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Crater High School, travels down Pine Street and concludes at Robert Pfaff Park. Craft and food booths will be set up for a Family Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Robert Pfaff Park. Fireworks will be shot off at Crater High School at about 10 p.m. or whenever it gets dark. EAGLE POINT : The Eagle Point Grange will serve up breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. ($4 adults, $2 children). A one-mile and 5-K fun run/walk will begin at 8 a.m., and vendor booths open at 9 a.m. Miss Eagle Point coronation is at 11 a.m. There will be gospel concerts from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 to 12:15 p.m., at the Main Street review stand. The All the King's Men Band will perform from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the beer garden, and again after the parade, which starts at 1 p.m. and moves down Main Street. Lawn mower races will follow the parade, and there will be children's booths in Mattie Brown Park. The Great Zucchini Race is set for 3 p.m. at the Main Street bridge. Fireworks will be shot off at dusk at the Eagle Point High School stadium. SHADY COVE : The second annual "Celebrate the Spirit of Independence" is set from 11 a.m. to dusk at Two Pines parking lot. There will be a barbecue lunch for $7.95, a margarita and beer garden, dunk tank, games, prizes, a clown, music and dancing to DJ Tune Meisters from noon to 4 p.m. and Zion Train from 4 p.m. to dusk. DIAMOND LAKE : The resort is making July 4 a four-day event this year with a scavenger hunt and lawn games, barbecue and live music each day. An amateur talent show is planned on Wednesday as well as a fireworks show. For information and a schedule, call 800-733-7593.
