SPECIAL ELECTION Jackson County marijuana tax ballots due by 8 p.m. Tuesday Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 9, 2015 at 3:57 PM Posted Mar. 9, 2015 at 3:57 PM » Social News Ballots to determine whether Jackson County should tax marijuana sales and production must arrive at an official drop site by 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted. Ballots may be dropped off at the Jackson County Elections Office, 1101 W. Main St., Suite 201, Medford, and public libraries in Ashland, Central Point, Eagle Point and Rogue River. All drop sites close at 8 p.m. Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker said turnout was at 33.8 percent this afternoon, a "decent percentage," but she expected more ballots to arrive in the final two days.  If approved, Measure 15-133 would authorize a tax of up to 25 percent on the sale of medical and recreational marijuana products.The Jackson County Board of Commissioners would set the actual tax rate. The countywide marijuana tax is the only measure on the ballot. The tax would apply to areas of the county outside cities. The measure also would authorize a medical and recreational marijuana tax on growers of $35 per ounce on marijuana flowers, $10 per ounce on marijuana leaves and $5 per immature marijuana plant. The growers' tax would not apply to people with Oregon Medical Marijuana Program cards producing medical marijuana solely for their own consumption, or to people producing recreational marijuana solely for their own consumption. The taxes would be retroactive to Dec. 1, 2014, with collection of the taxes beginning April 1. Jackson County does not have an estimate of revenue that would be collected if a county tax goes into effect. Walker said she's noticed an unusually large number of people forgetting to sign their ballots. Those people will receive a postcard in the mail and have 14 days to sign their ballot at the Elections Office to be counted, Walker said.
