PREP TRACK Relay spurs Tornado to victory ROSEBURG -- It had been a long, long time since a North Medford Black Tornado track and field team had a shot at beating Roseburg. When the opportunity appeared Tuesday afternoon at Finlay Field, the Tornado 1,600-meter relay foursome of Matt Parish, Andrew Ludlow, Simon Driskell and Nick Dunn didn't let it slip away. The teams were tied 70-70 entering the day's final event and the North quartet easily defeated the Indians, turning in a 3-minute, 32.67-second effort to give the Tornado a 75-70 victory. Roseburg was clocked in 3:40.62. Dunn also won the 400 meters (51.61) and 300 intermediate hurdles (40.42). Roseburg's girls won 105-39, as Erin Phillips won the 400 (1:01.58) and 300 hurdles (48.02). North's Jennifer Abbott won the 100 (13.19) and 200 (26.17), while Kim Harris took the 1,500 (5:12.79). At Central Point, Crater's boys swept the shot put, discus and pole vault en route to an 81-64 victory over Klamath Union. Brad Ralph sailed the discus 152-2 and won the javelin at 182-9, while Josh Jones cleared 6-5 in the high jump. Sam Gilbert won the 100 (12.91) and 300 hurdles (47.58) and ran legs on both relays to pace Klamath's girls to an 85-58 victory. At Ashland, Grants Pass' boys completed an unbeaten SOC dual meet season with an 80-65 triumph over the Grizzlies. Jake Zeliff was a triple winner, claiming the discus (151-0), shot put (50-8) and long jump (19-7), and Parker Lane won the 100 (11.4) and 200 (23.2). Ashland's girls won 78-66 as Jackie Woods unloaded a career-best 41-7 toss in the shot put. Her previous best was a 41-0 effort in last year's district meet. Deborah Lee captured the 400 (1:01.2) and triple jump (34-8), while Anita Sindelar won the 1,500 (5:10.7) and 3,000 (11:21.3). At South Medford, Kristen Russell set the school record in the pole vault for the fifth time this spring and Janette Martin sped to one of the state's fastest times in the 800 meters as the Panther girls won 14 of 17 events en route to a 104-41 victory over Eagle Point. Russell cleared 11-4 in the pole vault to improve on her previous best by three inches and re-emerge as the state leader in the event. Corrie Drakulich of Clackamas has gone 11-3. Martin, the state leader in the 400 at 57.0, ran the 800 for just the third time in her career and clocked 2:17.9 despite encountering virtually no competition. Freshman Heather Frigaard also had a good meet as she won the 100 in 12.7 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in a lifetime best 47.9. Jon Micah Sumrall registered a lifetime best of 11.1 to win the 100 and added victories in the 110 hurdles (15.1) and the long jump (19-8) for the South Medford boys, but it wasn't enough as Eagle Point eked out a 74-70 victory. Eagle Point trailed by one point heading into the final event of the day but Jon Bilden, Nick Rouhier, Thad Gala and Sean Johnston teammed up to win the 1,600 relay and give the Eagles the victory.
