The Raiders improved to 13-4 under first-year coach Larry Binney and began their league title defense by downing Concordia University (5-2) and Eastern Oregon University (2-0) at Albertson’s Symms Field. Junior Miranda Gillaspie (5-2) allowed only three hits and one earned run in a complete-game effort against CU but earned the win only after Southern untied a 2-2 deadlock with three sixth-inning runs. Junior all-star Haley Varley scored twice and delivered the game-winning hit (a two-run single), while junior outfielder Seanna Doyel went 3-for-4 and tied a school game record with three stolen bases. SOU scored twice in the first and loaded the bases in both the first and third innings, but collected only eight hits and struck out a season-high 11 times against Cav freshman starter Annele Huckins. Advertisement The Raiders went a collective 4-for-23 against the Mountaineers, but sophomore Amanda Cregan (6-1) scattered four hits and walked none in her first career complete-game shutout. Varley scored what turned out to be the winning run on a two-out, second-inning throwing error by EOU shortstop Casi Reisenauer. Two innings later, sophomore Leann Foster doubled and later scored an insurance run on an Alexis Cooper RBI groundout. SOU finished with seven stolen bases in the two games. The Raiders cap the two-day, 15-game round-robin tournament today against Albertson, Western Baptist and Oregon Tech. Although ACI serves as the tourney host, each game counts as a league contest.
