North ups SOC mark to 2-0 Defense proved pivotal for North Medford in a Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball game Friday against Klamath Union. North Medford experienced foul problems in the first half and trailed the visiting Pelicans 26-23 at the break. But the host Black Tornado took command in the third quarter when it limited KU to four points and pulled away for a 62-49 victory. "We limped through the first half because we had some players in early foul trouble," said North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh. "We clamped down on the defensive end in the third quarter." At halftime, Quilhaugh�s message to his players was, "Just get back on the floor and play hard, but don�t commit the nonsensical fouls." North received an important contribution off the bench from junior post Gabe Burchfiel, who provided 13 points and eight rebounds. Ben Anderson led North with 15 points. The senior guard was 6-for-11 from the field and added four assists. The Black Tornado (5-6, 2-0 SOC) shot 46 percent from the field and was 17 of 23 on the line. North outrebounded the Pels, 42-25.
