Mail Tribune 100, Jan. 2, 1923 By Alissa Corman Jan 02, 2023 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Jan. 2, 1923 CHIEF TIMOTHY AND BOY FIND BOOZE Chief Timothy scoured the Bear Creek jungles last night accompanied by a high school boy in search of a cache of booze, discovered three quarts of moonshine. Four high school boys discovered a considerable quantity of moonshine along the creek bottom yesterday afternoon and hid part of it. As a result of one of the boys coming home in an intoxicated condition the chief was called and the boy accompanied him on the quest. Three quarts of the liquor were discovered on the search, but as tracks in the mud showed, some one had stolen the rest of the “white lightning” which the boys had hidden. ADMINISTRATION OF MAYOR GADDIS TO BEGIN TONIGHT The new administration will go into office at tonight’s meeting of the council, when Mayor-elect E. C .Gaddis and the new councilmen, Messrs. Janney, Alenderfer, Jacobs, Crose, Butler and Paul will be sworn into office and the council will at once convene for organization and to hold its first meeting at which the new mayor will announce his policy and probably make his appointments, and the council will transact routine business. Rumor has it that Mayor Gaddis will make several changes in the important appointive offices and may make others later. It is known that Wm. A. Gates, Dr. J. J. Emmens and Vernon Vawter have handed in their resignations from the city boxing commission, leaving only John J. Buchter and R. F. Antle as the hold-over members of the commission. Mayor Gates and the present city councilmen will hold office until their successors are sworn in tonight. The new terms of City Recorder Alford and Mary Webber, city treasurer, began yesterday. DECEMBER RAINFALL MEDFORD, 5.35 IN. Medford and vicinity is certainly getting fed up on continuous rain lately and the present spell of wetness apparently is not over as rain is the prediction for tonight and Wednesday. Rain fell in torrents last Saturday night and by 8 a.m. Sunday the previous 24 hours’ quantity measured .94 of an inch, most of which fell during the night, flooding the sidewalks and streets and forming lakes at some street intersections and all low lying points. Since Sept. 1st last, up to this morning the rainfall in Medford and vicinity has amounted to 8.68 inches. In December alone there was 5.35 inches of rain here, the greatest quantity which had fallen in Medford in that month since 1907, when it totaled 9.58 inches. Within the past week the fall of rain has amounted to 2.61 inches. Prior to that period the rainfall had been pretty well scattered. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
