Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 16, 2005 Motorcycle accident kills Medford woman A Medford woman died late Sunday after falling off a speeding motorcycle that struck an opossum on a rural road southwest of Medford. Nichole Ashley Pech, 20, of the 800 block of Gilman Road, was pronounced dead at the crash scene after tumbling from a 2002 Honda CF4 and slamming into a mailbox post, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department reported. The bike’s driver, 27-year-old Michael Joseph Barrie, of the 1500 block of Dixie Lane, Medford, was taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center. He was treated and released from the hospital, a nursing supervisor said Monday afternoon. Both he and Pech were wearing helmets, said Sheriff Mike Winters. The silver motorcycle was traveling north on Thomas Road near Willow Way at about 9:40 p.m. when it hit the opossum, police said. Barrie locked the back brakes, which caused the vehicle to slide. The motorcycle skidded about 400 feet, which indicates a high-speed wreck, Winters said. No other vehicles were involved. The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department.
