Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 17, 2006 Bond would go toward police-station addition By JENNIFER SQUIRES for the Mail Tribune TALENT — The City Council gave the OK for a $700,000 bond proposal Wednesday. If voters approve, the money would go toward building an addition to the police department, demolishing the old City Hall and replacing it with a parking lot. The bond would be on the November ballot. "This is kind of a stop-gap for the next 10 to 15 years," Police Chief Bob Rector told the council. The current police station at 604 Talent Ave. was built in the mid-1970s and now is too small for the department, Rector said. A recent update to a needs assessment done in 2003 recommended the city build a new 5,000-square-foot facility, which would cost an estimated $2 million. Advertisement "That’s probably way beyond what folks want to pay for it," Rector said. Council members rejected the idea. Voters have not supported costly bond options to fund a new civic center and parks improvements in Talent in the past. "I don’t think it’ll fly either, personally," Mayor Marian Telerski said. An addition to the existing police station would add space on the south end of the building and serve the department for a decade or more.
