RAIDER ROUNDUP: SOU lets lead slip away in Idaho By SOU Sports Information Updated: Oct 29, 2022 09:26 PM A A CALDWELL, Idaho — Jon Schofield’s 4-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left quashed Southern Oregon’s upset bid and kept 12th-ranked College of Idaho atop the Frontier Conference standings with a 28-24 win on Saturday afternoon at Simplot Stadium. The Raiders (3-5) made the Yotes (7-1) play from behind for most of the afternoon by picking off quarterback Andy Peters three times in the first half as Cente Borja, Stokes Botelho, and Seth Miller had an interception apiece. They went into halftime up 21-14, and with 3:03 remaining in the fourth quarter Cesar Ruiz’s 30-yard field goal gave them a 24-21 edge. The Yotes answered by chipping away at the field with a 14-play, 80-yard march. The longest gain of their drive came courtesy of a roughing-the-passer penalty that brought them to SOU’s 19-yard line with 50 seconds left, and two Peters completions to Brock Richardson set up 1st-and-goal. Two plays later, Schofield got into the end zone. SOU lost fourth-quarter leads to C of I in both matchups this season. Raider quarterback Blake Asciutto completed 22-of-38 attempts for 260 yards, 116 of which went to Bryce Goggin. Goggin made a 24-yard touchdown catch with nine seconds to go in the second quarter, and Christian Graney, who collected six receptions for 65 yards, had a six-yard score to tie the game a minute earlier before Miller’s pick gave the ball back to SOU. The Raiders totaled 367 yards of offense to C of I’s 328 but matched the Yotes with three turnovers. Women’s Soccer SOU 3, WARNER PACIFIC 0: At Ashland, Southern Oregon got exactly what it needed to clinch the Cascade Conference’s No. 2 seed on the final day of the regular season with a win over Warner Pacific at Raider Stadium. The Raiders (10-4-3 overall, 9-1-2 CCC) capped a blazing run into the postseason with their fourth consecutive victory and ninth shutout during an active 11-game unbeaten streak. Phoebe Bunn, Mia Santander and Jessie Selby all shined on their senior day — Bunn with two assists, Santander with the go-ahead goal in the 10th minute, and Selby with her 200th career save and seventh shutout of the season. The Raiders entered the day tied with College of Idaho for second place, but the three-goal win and clean sheet gave them possession of the tiebreaker no matter the outcome of C of I’s final match tonight. They’ll open the CCC Tournament on Nov. 7 in Springfield with a quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 seed Oregon Tech. Men’s Soccer SOU 2, WARNER PACIFIC 2: At Ashland, the regular-season finale between Southern Oregon and No. 19 Warner Pacific had a little bit of everything before ending in a tie at Raider Stadium. SOU’s Tybalt Thornberry equalized the match with a successful penalty kick in the 88th minute, giving the Raiders (12-5-1 overall, 9-3-1 CCC) another point against a ranked squad a week after upsetting then-No. 23 Corban. Both teams were playing a man down at that point on a day with no shortage of dramatics. The Knights (16-0-2, 11-0-2) — who clinched the CCC regular-season title with a draw on Friday at Oregon Tech — got another goal from star freshman Andrew Martinez, his NAIA-leading 28th of the season, in the first half, and he assisted their go-ahead goal in the 87th minute by setting up Juan Gudino’s chip shot an instant after SOU was whistled for a foul. Their celebration didn’t last long. With 2:02 remaining, Gopala Sauer got tripped up in the box, giving Thornberry the shot to tie. Volleyball EASTERN OREGON 3, SOU 0: At Ashland, Cambree Scott compiled 12 kills and four blocks as top-ranked Eastern Oregon moved into sole possession of first place in the Cascade Conference with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 sweep of Southern Oregon. Scott and the Mountaineers (26-2 overall, 19-1 CCC), who possess the conference's top defense statistically in more than a decade, totaled 12 blocks and limited SOU (18-9, 12-8) to a .080 attacking average. They've won 26 of their last 27 matches and now own a one-match lead in first place over No. 3-ranked Corban, which fell in five sets Saturday at Evergreen (Wash.). The Raiders dropped into a fourth-place tie with two regular-season matches left to play, both on the road next week at Warner Pacific and Multnomah. They need one win to clinch a spot in the six-team CCC Tournament. SOU's Trinity Atuatasi led the team with 15 digs and Karina Oliveira had 12. Hailey Van Well poured in nine kills and Simone Gordon contributed seven. Kayla Neidight had three service aces to fuel a second-set run that had the Raiders up 15-10 and eventually 22-19. EOU ended the frame with six unanswered points.
