Butte Falls girls triumph over St. Mary's The sophomore trio of Brianne Smeltz, Sarah Matthews and Cathy Bartel sparked the Butte Falls girls basketball team to a season-opening, 36-32 victory at St. Mary's on Wednesday night. Smeltz, who plays point guard, had 10 points to accompany seven rebounds, seven steals and six assists. Matthews, a 6-foot post, was five of seven from the field for 11 points. And Bartel hauled in eight rebounds to help the Loggers (1-0) stymie the Crusaders (0-1). St. Mary's was paced by freshman Brittany Farrer, who scored 16 points. The Crusaders were just 11 for 32 from the field against Butte Falls' tough man-to-man defense. The Loggers hit 14 of 32 from the floor and overcame 7-for-19 free-throw shooting to win.
