North blows away Grants Pass GRANTS PASS - A year ago, North Medford came here for a non-conference softball game and didn't put its best foot - or effort - forward. Not so Thursday as the Black Tornado got one-hit pitching from Amanda Cregan and Steph Coe and erupted for three runs in the seventh inning of a 4-0 non-league win. "Last year we went over and dropped one," said North coach Sara Barry, "so we talked about not letting that happen again. The girls really came out strong and did a good job. They were pretty focused. "This year we took a different approach and got after it." Cregan pitched one-hit ball over four innings, fanning two and walking two, to gain her first decision. "She did real well," said Barry. "She struggled in the first inning is all, then came back with 1-2-3 innings. She really battled and did a great job." Coe, the Tornado ace, came on to get work in the final three innings, striking out five of the nine batters she faced. North scored in the fourth inning when Tai Kinney walked, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on Coe's single. Kinney scored on Britney Hillyer's fielder's choice. In the seventh, Brandi Paxton and Carrigan sandwiched walks around two outs, then Coe belted a two-run triple. Coe scored on a Hillyer single. Coe was 3-for-4 as North improved to 11-3 overall. SOUTH MEDFORD 2, EAGLE POINT 0 - At Eagle Point, Darci Byrne pitched a five-hitter and Lindsey McHenry went 3-for-3 to lead South Medford in the non-conference game. Byrne struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. South scored the winning run in the fourth inning when Amanda Blair and McHenry singled and Blair came around to score on an error. McHenry scored South's other run after reaching base on interference and scoring on Christin Palazzolo's grounder. Cassie Dodenhoff went 2-for-3 for Eagle Point. W - Byrne. L - Williams (0-2). Baseball EAGLE POINT 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 1 - At Eagle Point, freshman Ron Dupuy made his varsity debut and pitched a two-hitter in the non-conference game. Dupuy, who had pitched well all year on the freshman team, struck out three and walked five in his impressive outing. The Eagles (7-8) staked Dupuy to a 4-0 lead after one inning, getting run-scoring singles from Mark Farrell and Tyson Nelson and a sacrifice fly from Brian Sands. Dan Acrey added to the lead with a two-run double in the third. NORTH MEDFORD 8, ASHLAND 1 - North Medford's Andy Theen and Dave Mostue got promoted to No. 1 doubles and made their case to stay there at District Courts. Theen and Mostue defeated Roseburg's Stewart Wetmore and Jared Schrideer in a hotly-contested match that went to a third-set tiebreaker. Theen and Mostue won 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7). Erik Hill shot 1-under 71 and Joey Rossknecht 72 to lead the Cavemen. Hail stopped the match short, leaving the No. 2 teams from each school with incomplete rounds.
