Crater (16-5, 9-3 SOC) stayed in contention for the SOC title by beating the Indians 2-1 in nine innings and 1-0 in 10 frames. "It was just good softball up there," said Comets coach Chris Arnold, whose team closes the season next Saturday at conference-leading South Medford (11-1 SOC). "Both teams played very well. It was classic softball. The amazing thing was, the kids on both defenses just kept making plays." Almost. Advertisement Crater, getting strong pitching from Jenni Bittle in the opener, then Janelle Cristofaro in the nightcap, capitalized on an Indians error in the first game to score its runs. In the top of the ninth, Crystal Huntley walked, Justine Bettencourt singled and Kelle Thomas walked to load the bases with no outs. Kelsey Anhorn grounded into a fielder’s choice to third baseman Megan Ruhn, who got Huntley out at home for the first out. Allesha Spradling then popped a bunt to Ruhn for the second out, but Ruhn’s throw to first sailed into right field and allowed Bettencourt and Thomas to score. Roseburg retaliated with a single by Cari Schruth and a double by Ali Paz for a run before Bittle retired the side. Bittle (9-3) allowed five hits, struck out five and didn’t walk anyone. At one point, she retired 15 straight batters into the seventh inning. Counterpart Brooke Charles allowed four hits and fanned five. Game 2 went one inning better, the Comets pushing across a run in the 10th after Tyler Sutherland and Huntley hit one-out singles and advanced to third and second bases, respectively. After a groundout, Sutherland scored on a wild pitch. Cristofaro (7-2) finished off the Indians on two groundouts and a strikeout in the bottom half. She gave up five hits, struck out seven and walked two. For Roseburg (8-11, 4-8 SOC) Kim Posey limited Crater to four hits. In addition to scoring the winning run, shortstop Sutherland made a big play in the sixth inning. Posey was on third with one out and broke for home when a ball was hit into the hole. Sutherland made a backhanded stab and threw a strike to catcher Thomas to barely nail Posey. In the seventh, Roseburg got back-to-back singles with one out, but Sutherland fielded the next two grounders for assists to get out of the inning. Laura Tarkon had a home run in the third inning to help lead the offense in the first game. Deni Rowley and Brandi Paxton both went 3-for-5 in the nigthcap. Darcy Cordell went 2-for-5 and catcher Stephanie Haskett contributed three hits, including a double. GRANTS PASS 3-18, EAGLE POINT 0-2 — At Grants Pass, Ashley Bellum went 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBIs in the nightcap of an SOC doubleheader sweep for Grants Pass on Friday. The Cavers (14-8, 7-5 SOC) pounded out 13 hits in only three innings of play, while Eagle Point committed six errors. Jennifer Austin added three hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Karyne Sander had two hits and two RBIs. In the opener, Jessica Morton picked up her 11th pitching win in four innings of work.
