Panther netters tip Cavers, 6-3 Never mind that the Grants Pass High boys tennis team was missing its top two players. South Medford coach Joel Heller was happy to register a victory any way he could. The Panthers' Zach Matthews notched a solid victory over Mladen Sohanovic at No. 1 singles, and South Medford picked up wins from three of its four doubles teams to post a 6-3 Southern Oregon Conference victory. "They beat us earlier in the year, so it was good to get some revenge," said Heller, whose team improved to 2-4 in the SOC. Grants Pass was missing No. 1 singles player Paul Dickerson, who was playing at an out-of-town tournament, and No. 2 singles player Levi Brown, who was injured. ASHLAND 6, ROSEBURG 3 -- At Ashland, freshman Kevin Spears provided Ashland (10-1 SOC) some momentum with a dominating victory in No. 3 singles, and the Grizzlies went on to avenge their only SOC loss of the season. Roseburg defeated Ashland 5-4 earlier this season. In a highly competitive, No. 1 doubles confrontation, Ashland's Michael James and Lance Streng prevailed in a three-set match. Girls Tennis SOUTH MEDFORD 6, GRANTS PASS 3 -- At Grants Pass, South Medford won four of the five singles matches to down the Cavers in the Southern Oregon Conference match. In one of the exciting matches of the day, South's Crissie Day won a 9-7 tiebreaker over Heather Garese in the first set, then won the second 6-3 for the No. 2 singles win. Boys Golf HIDDEN VALLEY WINS -- Three Hidden Valley players shot in the 70s as the Mustangs tallied a 315 team score to claim a three-way Skyline Conference tournament. Medalist Marcus Olmdahl paced the winners with a 73, including an even-par 35 on the front nine. Teammates Dereck Horning, who also shot 35 on the front, and Steve Ewan came in at 76 and 79, respectively. Phoenix's Travis Brink shot 77 as the Pirates came in second at 328. Girls Golf HENLEY TRIUMPHS -- Henley's Brandi McElfresh and Cheryl Butts tied for medalist honors as the Hornets won a three-way District 6 tourney at Quail Point Golf Course. McElfresh and Butts each shot 89 as Henley defeated runner-up Phoenix by 94 strokes. Hidden Valley's Meghan Tate shot 101 and Phoenix's Amber George 104 to lead their teams.
