Shines HR sparks Medfords surge Chuck Shine blasted a two-run home run to lift the Medford Mustangs American Legion baseball team to a 3-2 win over Central Point in the opening game of a doubleheader sweep Sunday at Miles Field. Medford rolled to a five-inning, 29-5 win in the nightcap. Chris Empio cruised through the first three innings of Game 1 before running into trouble in the fourth. With the Mustangs clinging to a 1-0 lead, Josh Hinojosa smacked a two-out RBI double to knot the score at 1-all. Jeremiah Toews followed with an RBI bloop single to push Central Point into the lead. Shine quickly turned the Mustangs one-run deficit into a lead with the eventual game-winning, two-out blast to left, his fourth of the season. Empio improved to 4-0 on the season, allowing three hits and Matt Skundrick came on in the seventh to pick up his second save. Shines Game 1 blast awakened the Medford bats for their second game rout. The Mustangs totaled 25 hits, with Ken Halpins 5-for-5 effort with four runs and three RBIs leading the way. Medford had nine hits and sent 18 men to the plate in a 13-run third inning and benefited from four Central Point errors. Dan Bruce added four hits, three of them doubles, in four at-bats along with five runs and four RBIs. Phil Ouellette and Andy Bartels each added three hits apiece for Medford. Tony Conklin picked up his seventh win against one loss with his complete-game effort in the nightcap. The Mustangs improved to 28-11 overall and 7-3 in Area 4 play.
