Ashland climber hurt badly in 1,000-foot fall on Mount Shasta YREKA, Calif. � An Ashland man was listed in critical condition Monday after falling more than 1,000 feet on Mount Shasta early Saturday. David Warren Wieken, 36, is being treated for head injuries at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, the Siskiyou County Sheriff�s Department reported Monday. The sheriff�s department responded to the fall report at 6 a.m. Saturday after Shasta Mountain Guides, leading a separate party up the mountain, used a cellular phone to report the incident. Wieken�s climbing partner, whose name was not known, told sheriff�s deputies Wieken fell in the dark and disappeared out of his sight just before 6 a.m. Wieken apparently slipped on ice and fell more than 1,000 feet while climbing the Hotlum/Bolum route on the northeast side of Mount Shasta, the sheriff�s office reported. While the partner was climbing down to find Wieken, he came across the Shasta Mountain Guides group, which helped him locate Wieken and called in the accident report. A California Highway Patrol helicopter hoisted Wieken to a lower elevation, where he was picked up by a Mercy Air helicopter and transported to Redding at 10 a.m. Sheriff�s officials said both Wieken and his partner are experienced climbers, but this was Wieken�s first attempt to climb Mount Shasta.
