Jacksonville City Council to review church decision JACKSONVILLE --The City Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, to listen to comments about the First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville's plans to build a new church in the Pheasant Meadows Subdivision. The meeting will be held in the large group room at Jacksonville Elementary School. First Presbyterian is appealing the Planning Commission's Nov. 10 denial of the church's application for a conditional use permit. First Presbyterian has been meeting for 118 years in a historic landmark building that members say no longer meets the congregation's needs for classroom space and sanctuary size. The two-story structure is not easily accessible to senior citizens or people with disabilities, members say. The church wants to build a 448-seat sanctuary and several classrooms on 10 acres it owns at the corner of Middle and Singler streets. In other news, the City Council last week approved several projects using $8,650 from parks system development charges, said Paul Wyntergreen, city administrator. The projects include purchasing an arbor at Doc Griffin Park, $1,500; a water fountain, rock wall, lighting, sign and flag pole at Veterans Park, $3,850; a bench, plantings and irrigation at Veterans Park II, $2,100; and lighting at Scheffel Park, $1,200.
