The Oregon senior scored 24 points and made 7-of-12 3-pointers Saturday, but Oregon had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 72-63 loss at UCLA. As Abdul-Bassit stood in a hallway and spoke about the loss that put a dent in Oregon’s NCAA Tournament hopes, an elderly UCLA fan tapped him on the shoulder. “Why don’t you transfer?,” he asked Abdul-Bassit. “The way you shoot, we could use you.” It was an unexpected compliment that let Abdul-Bassit drop his disappointment. “I appreciate it,” he said. Abdul-Bassit’s performance at UCLA continued a stretch where he is playing his best basketball for Oregon as his career nears an end. The 6-foot-4 guard has started the last seven games and the Ducks (18-8) have won five. In his last 10 games, Abdul-Bassit has made 36-of-75 3s. “It is all due to my teammates finding me in open spots,” Abdul-Bassit said after becoming the first Oregon player to make seven 3-pointers in a game since Tajuan Porter in 2010. “They kept me going. They were telling me to keep shooting and keep moving to open spots.” Abdul-Bassit is shooting 45 percent from behind the arc, which would rank 10th in the nation, but he has not made enough to qualify among the leaders. “When he takes good shots, his percentage is pretty good,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “His shot selection was really good and he shot it really well.” Abdul-Bassit and guard Joseph Young are the two seniors on scholarship preparing for their final homestand against Colorado and Utah this week. Both have played key roles in helping the Ducks win six of their last eight games to move into a tie for third place in the Pac-12 Conference at 8-5. “Jalil has got a sense of urgency now,” Altman said recently. “I think every senior gets to that point where they go ‘Oh boy, I’ve got a month left here.’ You start your career and think you have forever and then all of a sudden you start cherishing every game because you know they are coming to an end. I don’t think any player will ever have it like they do in college, regardless of where you go. In college, everyone is pulling for you and the students are backing you and so it is a little different atmosphere. Jalil realizes that is coming to an end.” Abdul-Bassit took a long route to Oregon after graduating from Anchorage West High in Alaska. He played as a freshman at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y., before transferring to North Idaho College. He was injured at the start of last season and played sparingly for the Ducks, scoring 32 points in 17 games. He ranks fourth on the team with 8.8 points per game this season and is considered the team’s best perimeter defender. “It is definitely a lot different from last year. I am a lot more prepared to play this year,” Abdul-Bassit said. “I am more focused. Last year was a learning experience trying to learn from Jason Calliste and Johnny Loyd.” Oregon remains on the outside of most NCAA Tournament projections and needs a strong stretch run to make a third straight trip, beginning when the Ducks return home Wednesday to face Colorado. “We just have to bounce back, we have to keep moving forward and get better every day,” Abdul-Bassit said. “Every game in the Pac-12 is a must-win.
