The Black Tornado was defeated by the Mini Canes of Miami, 3-0, then rode a one-hitter by Janelle Cristofaro to a 4-1 victory against Eden Prairie, Minn. The Black Tornado begins the 116-team, double-elimination portion of the tournament at 4 p.m. today. Pitcher Kendra Strahm struck out nine and allowed six hits for the Black Tornado in the opening-game loss. The Mini Canes scored all their runs in the fifth inning. Strahm and Megan Ruhn had two hits each to account for the local team’s offensive output. Against Eden Prairie, Cristofaro struck out eight and the only hit she surrendered was an infield single in the seventh inning. Deni Rowley had two hits for the Black Tornado, while Strahm and Darcy Cordell drove in one run apiece.
