South overcomes adversity, gives Ashland boot South Medford underwent a couple of emotional swings before putting a 2-1 Southern Oregon Conference girls soccer victory over Ashland in the books Saturday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. Only five minutes into the match pitting conference championship contenders, South�s Abby Fowler went down with a knee injury. She was taken to the hospital and had tests that will determine the extent of the injury. "There was an audible pop, then she crumbled to the ground," said South coach Buzz Thielemann. "It took us a few minutes get our composure back." Heather Frigaard helped to change the mood when she took the ball on the outside on a breakaway. Frigaard, a sprinter in track, would not be caught and scored at 12:15. The play was particularly gratifying because it was the first time Thielemann put Frigaard in an offensive role. "We tried her at outside halfback," he said, "and we had results in 12 minutes, 15 seconds." Katie Casebeer rocketed South Medford�s other goal into the net from 30 yards out at nearly 25 minutes of the first half. Sweeper Kathleen Narus, who had a fine game controlling the defense, assisted on Casebeer�s goal. With injury time added to the first half, the Panthers appeared headed for another score. But the whistle blew to end the half as Colleen Salisbury�s shot sailed to and into the goal at 40:12. The score was nullified. Ashland closed to within 2-1 on a Lindsay Huyett goal from 20 yards out at 12:57 of the second half. The Grizzlies nearly tied it midway through, but Panthers goalie Sarah Bryan pounced on a ball bouncing around near the goal mouth. The Grizzlies, who were outshot 30-10, got a strong effort from their goalie as well, Stephanie Hargis. NORTH MEDFORD 6, CRATER 1 � At Central Point, freshman twins Nicole and Kelly Vilarino were impact players for North Medford. Nicole Vilarino scored two goals off assists from her sister and added one assist. The Black Tornado (2-3-3, 1-1 SOC) led 2-1 at halftime. The Vilarinoes combined for the game�s initial goal at the 30th minute and again three minutes into the second half. Junior midfielder McKenzie Weiler scored an unassisted goal to provide the Black Tornado a 2-0 margin at the 36th minute. Crater cut the deficit in half on Ashlee Richmond�s goal from 6-yards out just before halftime. Lindsey Arkenburg, Christine Cameron and Emily Schuler added goals later in the second period. Weiler�s pressure soccer at the midfield contributed to North�s effectiveness, as did the play of Lisa Munyon and Tiffany Blodgett on the defensive side. GRANTS PASS 2, ROSEBURG 1 (shootout, 4-3) � At Roseburg, Grants Pass forced the overtime on a goal with two minutes to play, then dealt Roseburg its first SOC loss in a shootout. Jeanelle Thompson, Natasha Crook and Stephanie Clubb converted on their shootout penalty kicks before Katie Lamount sealed the victory. Rachel Stribling, Morgan Downie and Erin Goodell scored for the Indians (4-4-1, 1-1 SOC). The squads played 77 scoreless minutes before Stribling broke the tie with a penalty kick . But one minute later, the Cavers (4-2, 1-1 SOC) countered when Stacie Feetham took a cross pass from Club and scored. KLAMATH UNION 6, EAGLE POINT 0 � At Klamath Falls, the Pelicans scored three goals in each half to keep Eagle Point winless in conference play. Brandy Bocchi had a goal and an assist in the first half, and Brianne Hackett had two unassisted goals in the second half. Klamath Union (6-2, 2-0 SOC) only allowed five shots on goal.
