Two small wildfires break outside Cave Junction By Mail Tribune staff Feb 14, 2022 12:20 PM A A Oregon Department of Southwest Oregon District crews are battling two small wildfires reported late Monday morning about 10 miles northeast of Cave Junction. [ODF Southwest Oregon District photo] Wildland firefighters are battling two small fires about 10 miles northeast of Cave Junction. As of shortly before noon Monday, the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon district was battling two fires near Little Grayback Peak: one estimated at 1-1/2 acres burning on private land in the area and another fire burning a tenth of an acre on bureau of Land Management lands, according to an 11:56 a.m. post on ODF Southwest Oregon District Facebook page. The fire was “spreading minimally,” as of midday Monday, and neither fire is threatening structures; however, ODF Southwest Oregon District states that the fire is burning in difficult terrain with hazards such as snags, steep ground with risks of falling trees rolling logs. “These factors will mean containment may take longer to ensure the safety of those on the line,” ODF Southwest Oregon’s post states. As of midday Monday, a cause for the two fires is unknown. ODF Southwest Oregon District states that fire investigators are on scene working to determine the two fires’ causes.
