On Tuesday, the Pirates (10-6 overall, 3-2 Skyline) took care of business and didn’t even let the Chieftains catch their breath in a 25-15, 26-24, 25-14 Skyline Conference victory. Phoenix middle blocker Tiffany Ross turned in a team-high 19 kills. Kelly Meredith had 10 blocks and 15 kills for the Pirates. "I think the overall impression was that our kids were very focused in their approach," Phoenix coach Tom Murphy said. "Our middles (Ross and Meredith) get a great deal of recognition because of their ability to put the ball down, but I thought Kelsey Russell did a good job distributing the ball tonight." Russell also made good on 16 of 17 serves. Jennifer Dunlap was successful on 16 of 16 serves. Rogue River junior Casey Houston had seven stuff blocks for the Chieftains, who were without Madi Biggs, who was sick. "Casey was real strong at the net and was able to get a hand on a lot of (Ross’) hits," Rogue River coach Tanya Ferguson said. "But we couldn’t get a block on (Ross) consistently and they set her constantly." The Pirates claimed the first game handily, but the Chieftains stepped up and extended Phoenix in the second, taking a 24-22 lead at one point. The Pirates managed to even the game at 24-24 and closed on Tiffany McCarty’s service. McCarty scored on 10 of 10 service points, including the final two of the second game.
