Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 21, 2006 Resurgent South girls defeat Ashland Prep Roundup The South Medford girls tennis team didn’t win a match and finished last in the Southern Oregon Conference two years ago. Now, the Panthers have emerged as one of the SOC’s best teams, improving to 5-0 league with a 6-2 victory over Ashland Thursday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. South’s Elora Grant improved to 5-0 with a victory in No. 2 singles, while sisters Sam Ruffe and Natalie Ruffe also stayed unbeaten in No. 1 doubles. Grant defeated Lila Schreiber, 6-2, 6-0, and the Ruffe sisters breezed by Sami Laskos and Maddy Stokes, 6-2, 6-3. "The girls are playing very well and working really hard right now," said Panther coach Laura Kimball. Ashland’s No. 1 singles player Kayla Moyse, the defending district champion, scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Emily Works, whose only two defeats this year have come against the Grizzlies’ top competitor. Boys SOC Tennis SOUTH MEDFORD 5, ASHLAND 3 — At Ashland, South Medford won three of four matches in doubles to hand Ashland its first SOC defeat. The Panthers dropped an 8-0 decision to the Grizzlies earlier this season. Nonconference Softball SOUTH MEDFORD 3-9, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0-2 — At Bend, freshman Dominique Newman tossed a shutout in her first varsity start to propel South Medford in Game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader. Alyssa Dixon had three RBIs in the opener, while Becky Spence was 2-for-3. In the nightcap, Kinzie Towry blasted a three-run double to spark a seven-run fourth inning that helped South pull away. Marissa Towry also had three RBIs on two hits. On Wednesday, the Panthers (6-4) used a two-run double by Simone Hubbard in the seventh to rally and beat Summit, 5-3. Freshman pitcher Jessica Mondale notched her first varsity victory in the win. Bryan Hayden and Evan Shahan each had two hits in the opener for the Mustangs, and Thomas Bagwell and Matt Stuart did likewise in the nightcap. SOC Boys Golf GRANTS PASS WINS — At Eagle Point, Grants Pass prevailed in an all-Southern Oregon Conference match in which scores were higher than usual at Eagle Point Golf Course. The tournament was the second of six league counting events. Grants Pass won with a score of 328. It was followed by Roseburg (333) and Ashland (337).
