Prep roundup Mustangs gain revenge with win over Marist GRANTS PASS -- The Hidden Valley Mustangs cashed in on a long-awaited payback Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Marist in the Class 3A/2A/1A boys soccer state quarterfinals at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. The sixth-ranked Mustangs were knocked out of last year's state playoff semifinals by two-time defending state champion Marist. "Marist really motivated us," Hidden Valley coach Charlie Seal said. "Our kids wanted a chance at them again. This is the one we've been waiting for for a long time." Hidden Valley advances to a semifinal road match Tuesday against top-ranked Woodburn, which defeated Wilsonville 4-1. The Mustangs (14-1-1) turned the tables on Marist in this year's state playoff match by scoring two goals in the first 30 minutes, then relied on some outstanding goal keeping by Tim VanderStoel to preserve the shutout. Marist jumped out to an early two-goal lead en route to a 5-1 victory in the 1997 semifinals. The Mustangs scored at the fifth minute when Ben Jaramillo's blast from 30 yards deflected off a Marist defender and into the Spartans' net. At the 30th minute Ken Pipher headed in a crossing pass from Matt Johnson from about 6 yards out. "Our game plan was to come out and hit them first and start really strong," said Seal. "This was not one of our better games. I'm thankful for the win, but I see much needed improvement if we're going to take it all the way." Hidden Valley won its only boys soccer state championship in 1993 with a 4-1 victory over LaSalle. VanderStoel recorded his seventh shutout of the season. The talented freshman had to the leave the game for about 15 minutes midway through the first half when he was taken out with a cleat to the face that gave him a bloody nose and lacerated cheek. "Tim VanderStoel was the MVP of the game in my opinion," said Seal. "He was courageous enough to come back in and make several crucial saves. He really held his composure." The Mustangs also received a big effort from defender Denny Palmer, who drew the assignment on high-scoring forward John Sayre. "He had the tough task of marking probably the best striker in the state," said Seal. "Sayre had 33 goals coming into the game and Denny only allowed him three shots on the day. He was his shadow all afternoon." Marist finished the season at 13-2 and posted a 38-3 record over the past three seasons. "This was almost like a double victory because our only loss was to Catlin Gabel and Marist beat them in the second round," said Seal.
