Lauren Blair wasn’t yet born while Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and Dusty Springfield were singing their way onto the American pop charts, but their music brings back childhood memories. “My dad was heavy into 1960s music,” she recalls. “I remember growing up in the 1980s and listening to that music on our Sunday drives to the beach in our conversion van.” “Beehive: The ’60s Musical” is a walk down memory lane, says Blair, who is directing Oregon

When it comes to attracting tech companies to the valley, sometimes it comes down to factors as small as how many microbreweries your city has, or how many miles of bike paths. That’s what keynote speaker Mary Hebert told the Southern Oregon Business Conference Thursday afternoon at the Inn of the Commons in Medford. “These are things that speak to — and they might not be hard quantitative things — but they’re speaking to the overall culture and feeling of a communi

A proposed redesign of the Japanese Garden in Lithia Park is on hold. The donor behind the proposal and the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission have agreed to freeze the project for the remainder of the year due to negative reaction in the community. On Monday, APRC voted 3-2 to proceed with the Japanese Garden redesign, which called for the removal of two 100-year-old healthy Douglas fir trees, which many people in the community opposed. “The future of the garden is uncertain,”

Being embraced by their new community means more to Brittany Santos and her 7-year-old daughter, Jazelle, than any household item they could have received. While Santos is appreciative of the many donations from her new neighbors and good Samaritans in the Rogue Valley in recent weeks, the survivor of the devastating Camp fire says the loss of community was the hardest thing to process. Everything happened so quickly. Santos, who lived for a half-dozen years in Paradise, California, and her moth

School principals wear many hats, but rarely is one of them "aerobics instructor." It's 8 a.m. and Ruch Elementary School principal Julie Hill is up on the stage in the school gymnasium. R&B is blaring from the speakers, and Hill is kick-stepping, doing a respectable Jane Fonda imitation. Spread out in lines across the basketball court below her are 200 students — ages 4 to 14 — and the entire faculty, all following her in lockstep. "I've read research that says when you start the da

By Oregon legislators this year want to permanently prohibit oil and gas drilling off the Oregon Coast, although no one has shown an interest in poking a hole in the coastal floor. Despite a call from the Trump administration last year to open up the waters, the industry itself has no serious interest in exploring or extracting oil and gas under the Pacific off Oregon. “At this time, there is not a lot of chomping at the bit to look at production off the coast of Oregon,” said Kevin

"We will obviously be having conversations with the Legislature about more resources, particularly for this area," Brown said. The governor made a number of stops in Medford Wednesday, including at the Medford Air Tanker Base, where she highlighted a $1.5 mill
