All over the Rogue Valley, Santa’s workshops are abuzz with activity. But it’s doubtful any are busier than Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4116 in Rogue River. Donned Tuesday in Santa hats and gay holiday-theme apparel, a dozen or so elves — aka members of the VFW Auxiliary — frantically wrapped lots of toys and goodies for approximately 200 children in the Rogue River area. Sherry Prudhon, president of the auxiliary, was making a list and checking it twice as she navi

It's always fun to pause at the end of the year to reflect on the best bites and tasty trends. I was especially impressed with Rogue Valley entrepreneurs starting small by jumping on an idea that has proved huge elsewhere: food carts. A handful of food trucks have cruised Southern Oregon the past few years, serving plenty of hot dogs, tacos and bento, with a few offering upscale items featuring local products at local wineries, breweries, farmers markets and random parking lots around town. OCEAN OUTLOOK COASTWIDE: Forecasts call for 10-knot winds and 3-foot wind waves outside of Brookings Friday, followed Saturday by much of the same. Sunday’s forecast is for the winds to hold steady at 10 knots but wind waves jumping to 4 feet. All in all a pretty good forecast for South Coast ocean anglers. A1967 Chevrolet dump truck was the only thing Allen Surgeon managed to rescue from a massive fire that burned his family business and at least one other Friday afternoon. Surgeon was working nearby when a fire sparked just before 5 p.m. at Davis Finish Products at 1790 Avenue G in White City. "At first I thought Biomass was on fire, but as I got closer I realized it was my business," Surgeon said. The flames quickly spread throughout Davis Finish Products' 140,000-square-foot complex, setting th

State boating managers are coming to Southern Oregon next week to test the waters on how newly proposed statewide rules could help wakesurfers, boarders and relatively new wakeskaters play nice around others. The Oregon State Marine Board is taking comments on draft rules banning wakesurfing and wakeboarding within 200 feet of a dock, floating home, boathouse, moorage or a person in the water. The proposals also seek to keep these riders and their boats throwing big wakes at least 100 feet away

Josephine County voters said no to a public safety levy Tuesday for the fourth time since 2012. This time, the margin was 54 to 46 percent. The proposed five-year levy of $1.40 per $1,000 of assessed property value would have raised about $9 million a year to restore patrols, add capacity to the county jail and reopen the detention unit and shelter at the shuttered Juvenile Justice Center. The language and tax rate were the result of a survey commissioned by a local organization called Community

Increasingly dry and hot weather has prompted the Forest Service and federal Bureau of Land Management to increase campfire restrictions within the Wild Section of the Rogue River. Those who float or hike the Lower Rogue Canyon can build and maintain fires only within a raised fire pan in areas free of vegetation and below the high-water mark. All ashes must be carried out and each group of rafters must carry a shovel and bucket. The restrictions run from Grave Creek near Galice to the mouth of
