illustrates the pedestrian im provem ents, including side walks along identified arterial and collector streets and a variety of m ulti-use paths as discussed in the Bicy cle Plan. • Priorities for sidewalk improvem ents are “Safe Routes to School”, transit and then general accessibility to activity centers (like shopping and em ployment) • Construct new and/or setback sidewalks (where ver possible) as part of roadway improvem ent projects. • Add new sidewalks or pathway s along existing arteri al and m ajor collector streets to fill in gaps and connect to schools, transit stops and other important pedestrian destinations (see Figure 10- 3). Use adaptable sidewalk standards that fit the environm ent considering available right-of-way , adjacent land use, and speeds and volum es of traffic on the adjacent street. • Add new sidewalks in vicinity of schools as identified in Table 10-12. • Overcom e barriers to pedestrian circulation through the use of accessway s, multi-use paths or easem ents or other creative strategies. En sure ADA com pliance on pedestrian facilities. • Com plete Bear Creek Greenway , Larson Creek Greenway , selected im provem ents along Lone Pine Creek, and identify other opportunities for m ulti-use paths. • Implem ent safety improvem ents such as evaluating and addressing where possible the contributing causes to existing pedestrian accidents to identify appropriate street or intersection improvem ents (this could include sight distance, lack of clear right-of-way , or other factors). • Implem ent operational improvem ents such as crossw alks where active pedestrian protection can be provided (such as a signal or flashing beacon) , curb extension to reduce street crossing distances for pedestrians, adequate signal tim ing fo r safe pedestrian street crossing, pedestrian detection such signal pushbuttons or other devices as appropriate • Improve the general pedestrian environm ent: o Incorporate planter strips or other separa tion from vehicle traffic into pedestrian improvem ent projects o Address the need for pedestrian connectiv ity and accessibility through the land use/land developm ent process including developm ent of pedestrian-friendly mixed-use developm ent and pedestrian-friendly building/site orientation and design o Develop accessway s between buildings to shorten walking distances o Provide street lighting o Conduct routine m aintenance of pedestrian sy stem • Encourage schools, safety organizations and law enforcem ent agencies to provide inform ation/instruction regarding pedestrian safety . • As appropriate, use an established city trans portation com mittee, such as the proposed Bicy cle Advisory Com mittee to help identify and prioriti ze pedestrian sy stem improvem ent projects, to advocate and advise of pedestrian issues, and to encourage pedestrian education Medford Transportatio n System Plan 10-31 Non-M otorized Transportation Plan
