This performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker, only the second orchestra to play the work, was conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. It was followed by Robert Schumann's Second Symphony, whose performance revealed the familiarity between the orchestra and its former chief conductor: "The score opens out to a become a musical expression of nature, with powerful light and shadow effects, expansive melodies, luminous timbres, and energetic drive" (Der Tagesspiegel). WATCH CONCERT Photo: Monika Rittershaus The future of the great orchestras Free of charge: Jorg Widmann conducts the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, whose members are music students between the ages of 18 and 28, gave a guest performance in Berlin at the end of their spring tour. Between works by Mendelssohn and Schumann, they played the impressive, purely instrumental Messe for large orchestra by J6rg Widmann, one of the most versatile musicians of our time. In this concert, Widmann took on the roles of both solo clarinettist and conductor, spurring the young, gifted musicians on to performances as virtuosic as they were expressive: "These are the musicians of the future of the great orchestras" (Kulturradio).
