Does Labeling Products Manufactured in the
West Bank Promote Peace?
The European Union has called for member states to require
goods originating from the West Bank to be labeled separately L;Plyths & Facts:
from products from the rest of Israel. Following this move, the 2012
Obama Administration also announced plans to enforce
regulations requiring goods entering the United States from
the West Bank to be labeled as such. The EU and Obama
mistakenly believe that this will pressure Israel to evacuate the
West Bank and capitulate to Palestinian demands. This
cynical campaign is blatantly hypocritical and anti-Semitic and
will in no way advance the cause of peace.
As Danielle Pletka of the American Enterprise Institute has
noted, "Labeling goods made by Israeli businesses in
disputed territories, but not goods made in other disputed territories like Kashmir, for
example, is an example of blatant anti-Semitism." As is so often the case, it is only
Israeli Jews who must be given special treatment while other peoples involved in
conflicts are ignored. "What, you say, but there are no Jews occupying those other
places? We only condemn the Jews? Well, of course. Because only the Jews are
especially worthy of EU condemnation. Next, a yellow star. Now that would be
bold," wrote Pletka. Though European leaders claim to oppose the efforts of the
BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement to boycott and isolate Israel,
the labeling campaign supports it.

The McCarthy Paradox

a a a If Joseph McCarthy didn't exist, Israel's detractors, anti-democrats and anti-
Semites would have to invent him. Old Joe has become the knee-jerk
answer to any effort to respond to anyone attacking Israel. The paradox is
that by invoking McCarthy to suggest they are being silenced, Israel's
enemies are attempting to muzzle their critics.
In 1983, AIPAC published a booklet, The Campaign to Discredit Israel, with
information about speakers who regularly appeared on campus to express
hostile views. ADL published a similar book. Both were vilified for producing
a "blacklist" and never revised the publications. More recently Daniel Pipes
started "Campus Watch," which exposes faculty engaged in academic
malpractice; he, too, is accused of McCarthyism.

Fact of the Day
Israel Has the Highest Number of Vegans Per Capita
Israeli food writer, critic, and chef, On Shavit, claims that the Israeli vegan
revolution began to pick up steam in 2012, when American animal-rights
activist Gary Yourofsky's YouTube lectures on veganism were translated
into Hebrew. These online videos have been viewed by Israelis 1.5 million
times and counting.
On October 13, 2014, Israel hosted the world's largest vegan festival, with
15,000 participants. The festival featured 100 food stalls, celebrity speakers,
cooking demonstrations, and music.
Although veganism is "trendy" around the globe in 2016, Israel takes vegan
culture to a whole new level. Tel Aviv was ranked as the number one travel
destination for vegan travelers in 2015 by U.S.-based food site The Daily
Meal, beating out New York City, Berlin, and Chennai, India to claim the top
spot. Israel is the only place in the world where you can find vegan Domino's
pizza, topped with non-dairy cheese. Domino's locations in Israel sold more
than 500,000 vegan pizzas in 2015 according to Ido Fridman, the company's
VP of Marketing in Israel. Popular Israeli restaurants Aroma and Cafe Greg
also feature entire menus of vegan offerings.
