Costs and pricing Understanding the costs and pricing of CDR technologies is essential for evaluating their scalability and market potential. While costs reflect the production and operational expenditures required to capture and store CO2, pricing highlights market dynamics and buyer expectations, influenced by factors such as technology maturity, demand and volume commitments. Cost variability across CDR pathways (current prices) The costs of CDR technologies vary significantly due to factors such as energy requirements, technology readiness and scale of deployment:12 –DAC: Current costs range widely from $500 to $1,200 per tonne, making it the most expensive pathway –BECCS: Costs are currently in the range $200– $600 per tonne, benefiting from integration with existing biomass supply chains –Biochar: The most mature and cost-stable pathway, with costs averaging $192 per tonne and a narrow price range, making it more predictable than other CDR solutions –ERW: Costs range from $200 to $500 per tonne, with potential for reductions as MRV methodologies improve These cost variations reflect differences in technological maturity, energy intensity and supply-chain readiness. While BECCS and DAC are expected to see greater cost reductions over time, biochar remains the most stable in pricing due to its established production processes. Cost-reduction projections While cost reductions are expected across all pathways, the pace and feasibility vary: –BECCS and biochar have more predictable cost declines due to existing supply chains –DAC remains highly uncertain, with outcomes dependent on technology improvements, energy pricing, capex reductions and policy incentives –ERW’s cost reductions depend less on process improvements and more on logistics and MRV standardizationPrice ranges by CDR technology ($/tonne) FIGURE 10 2,000 1,500 1,000 500 0 DAC BECCS Biochar ERW Price range Average Source: World Economic Forum Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies: Market Overview and Offtake 18
