- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Menu Guide Wedding Weather Subscribe Contact Us October 18, 2005 Military opt-out explained Volunteers pass out fliers at AHS By Jennifer Squires Ashland Daily Tidings In September, three Peace House volunteers stood outside Ashland High School with fliers explaining alternatives to military enlistment to students. “We’re talking about the provision in No Child Left Behind ... that mandates schools release information to military recruiters unless students opt out,” said Stuart O’Neill, the youth and militarism program coordinator for Peace House. “Our leaflet has information about that. It’s basically telling students to talk to their counselors about how to opt out.” They also talk about the ASVAB test, a career placement test developed by the military that students can take for free in high school. The No Child Left Behind legislation, passed in 2002, included a provision that requires public schools to provide military recruiters with student directory information, unless the student has signed an opt-out form. Military recruiters also arrange on-campus visits at schools. The length and frequency of those visits are negotiated individually with schools, according to Army recruiters in Medford. At AHS, volunteers contacted a couple hundred students in one day. The school was one of a half-dozen area high schools to which Peace House volunteers brought their message once classes began this fall. “Students are interested in information, and we feel it’s really important that they have access to information,” O’Neill said, adding Peace House representatives didn’t go on campus but waited for students across the street or on sidewalks adjacent to the school. Peace House plans to continue their counter-recruitment efforts and will hold a meeting for anyone interested in the program from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Carpenter Room at the Medford Library, 205 S.
