Scott Schuster gave up his chief position in Butte Falls to come to Ashland, where he’d gone to school. Jennifer Squires | Ashland Daily Tidings The longtime Valley resident and Southern Oregon University graduate returned to the Ashland force about a year ago after spending 18 months with the Butte Falls Police Department. Up in Butte Falls, a tiny community 20 minutes from Eagle Point by police cruiser, Schuster got an opportunity few young officers do — he was named chief. The quick promotion from school resource officer, which he had been at BFPD, to chief in 2003 gave Schuster a glimpse into what it’s takes to run a department. He worked the job for over a year, driving his police car home each night just in case a call came in overnight, before he realized he wanted to return to the Ashland force. “I liked Ashland,” he said. “I wanted to come back here.” Schuster got his start in law enforcement with the SOU Security Department. He was hired as a public safety officer there in 1998, almost 10 years after he first moved to the area to pursue a degree in criminology, and also became a reserve officer with the APD. Two years later, a full-time position for a sworn officer opened up in the department, so Schuster left the university to join the Ashland force. But it wasn’t right for Schuster. Less than a year into his career in the department, he resigned to finally finish that criminology degree at SOU and went back to the reserve force. That’s when Butte Falls offered him a chance to work in schools, and then as the head of the department. Of course, Schuster eventually returned to the APD. It’s been about a year and, now, he feels like he’s in it for the long haul. “I missed it and a lot of my friends are here,” Schuster said. He likes that the department is big enough to have those “big department benefits,” such as good equipment and good salaries, but not so large they deal with a lot of major crime. Schuster has applied to go through the sergeant training process with the department and, although chief may be a long way off, he thinks getting back into some of those management roles he learned about in Butte Falls would be exciting and challenging. “I want to have a voice,” Schuster said.
