--> --> Oct. 26: Raider netters earn another easy win By Rich Rosenthal For the Tidings The 15th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team tallied its eighth consecutive victory and 12th straight at home with a 30-22, 30-17, 30-26 Cascade Conference victory over archrival Oregon Tech, Friday night at McNeal Pavilion. The second-place Raiders (17-3, 13-1) committed only four attack errors in Games 2 and 3 while limiting the third-place Owls (17-6, 9-5) to a .127 offensive efficiency. SOU juniors Kristina Matchett and Lindsey Aitchison collected 15 and 11 kills, respectively, and combined for five of the team's 11 blocks, while senior hitter Kacee Jacobsen had nine kills and two stuffs. "Kristina started out strong and set the tempo, and Lindsey and Kacee really took it from there," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "(SOU setter) Dani (Arlyn) did a great job of spreading the ball around to our hitters." OIT, which lost for the fifth consecutive year on the Raider home court, was paced by junior hitter Anita Stanford's 11 kills and senior defender Tyann Sandusky's match-high 11 digs. Southern trailed 2-0 to start both Games 1 and 2, but a 14-7 Raider run helped ice the first frame, and a 6-nil skein ended the latter. Stanford and senior hitter Danielle Dobey combined for five kills to help OIT stake a 16-13 margin in Game 3, but the Raiders sprang three blocks and Jacobsen and Aitchison contributed four kills in a 11-2 run that staved off an extended match. Arlyn, who leads the league in assists, compiled 40 more to help SOU hit over .300 for the fifth time over the past six outings. Junior setter Julie Dancer, a former Roseburg High standout, collected 30 assists for OIT. The Raiders, winners of 15 of their past 16 and nursing the school's longest win streak since the middle of the 2000 season, return to action next Friday at home against Western Baptist. SOU Women's Soccer The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team registered a key victory in its hopes for a Cascade Conference playoff berth by downing third-place Albertson College 3-0 Friday afternoon. The sixth-place Raiders (5-9-2, 4-6-2), who must win at least three of their final four regular season clashes to have a chance of extending their season into the four-team league tournament, extended a tenuous 1-0 halftime edge with two second-half strikes by freshman midfielder Courtney Proden. Southern Oregon's relentless offensive attack produced a 24-18 shot advantage, and the aggressive play resulted in what turned out to be the game-winner in the 35th minute, Lisa Howard's five-foot rebound of her own missed shot that deflected off Coyote goalie Danielle Dorsch. Albertson (9-8, 7-6) squandered several solid scoring chances the second half. Junior forward Alyssa Latham, who led all players with 12 shots, hammered three free kicks over the Raider goal and her three open attempts were stopped by SOU goalkeeper Patti McCoy. Proden, a Sheldon High graduate who walked onto the SOU squad two weeks ago, put the game away with her first collegiate scores: a 20-yard blast in the 47th minute and a five-yarder off a Jeannelle Thompson miss in the 87th. Proden led the Raiders with nine shots, while Howard and sophomore midfielder Amber Velasco tallied three each. McCoy carded her fourth shutout of the season by stopping all four ACI shots on goal. Southern Oregon plays its final home contest of the year Saturday at 1 p.m. against Eastern Oregon, while Albertson travels to Klamath Falls to take on Oregon Tech. Email your...
