AMERICAN LEGION WORLD SERIES Mustangs stun defending champs in World Series opener Ragan pitches into ninth, Rogan has clutch RBI single as Medford upsets Brooklawn By Alan Ford For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Alan Ford For the Tidings Posted Aug. 13, 2015 @ 8:52 pm By Alan Ford For the Tidings Posted Aug. 13, 2015 @ 8:52 pm » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> SHELBY, N.C. — No one had to say it. With two-time defending American Legion World Series champion Brooklawn, New Jersey, in the field with a slew of key players returning, it was obvious who the pre-tournament favorite was. That didn’t faze the Medford Mustangs. They went about their business with solid pitching and defense and got enough clutch hits to stun Brooklawn, 3-2, in the ALWS opener Thursday at Keeter Stadium/Veterans Field. Medford (43-13) built a 2-0 edge by the fourth inning and withstood a two-run rally to tie it in the sixth by Brooklawn. After the Mustangs’ Micah Brown tripled in the seventh, Bryce Rogan singled up the middle to put the Oregon champs ahead for keeps. Medford is back in action at 1 p.m. PDT today against Millard, Neb., in the pool-play format. Brooklawn will face the Nebraska team Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PDT. Medford set the tone real early with its infield defense, getting impressive efforts by its middle infield of shortstop Brown and second baseman Cowden in the first inning. “Really, our defense has been the most inconsistent part of our game,” Medford coach Nate Mayben said. “At times we’ve struggled with it, other times we’ve been great. But today our defense really was huge.” That was all left-hander Jordan Ragan needed. He kept Brooklawn off-balance most of the day by staying ahead of the hitters. He pitched into the ninth allowing two earned runs, six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. “He was able to get ahead of many of the hitters,” Mayben said. “He also has a good curveball and change, so we didn’t have to double up on pitches a lot. “You let a good pitcher get up 1-0 and it makes a difference. He did a good job.” Even when Brooklawn produced a couple hits and Ragan hit two batters in the sixth, allowing New Jersey to pull even, it didn’t deter Medford. “That’s our team, we don’t let down,” Ragan said. “Even if the other team has a big inning, we’re still going to play hard. “And this atmosphere was great. We had people who didn’t even know us pulling for us.” Medford’s first two runs came in the second and fourth innings. In the second, Eric Carlson singled and, after a balk, moved around to score on Steen Fredrickson’s two-out single for the first run of the game. In the fourth, Colton Westfall drove home Austin Zavala to make it 2-0. Lucas Rollins had a pair of hits for Brooklawn (44-6). Tyler Mondile started and went six innings for the New Jersey champs, allowing two runs on seven hits. Reliever Dante Scafidi took the loss after allowing the seventh-inning run. After Ragan gave up a leadoff single to Brooklawn’s Ray Taylor in the ninth, reliever Cody Coggins came in to close it. Coggins was helped when Zavala gunned down Taylor on a steal attempt, then got a pair of pop outs to end it. Fredrickson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Brown was 2-for-4 with a run and Rogan was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
