The funding would build an addition to the police department, and cover the demolition of the old city hall and paving to turn that area into a parking lot. Voters will be asked to approve the money in the November election. “This is kind of a stop-gap for the next 10 to 15 years,” Police Chief Bob Rector told the council. The current police station, located at 604 Talent Ave., was built in the mid-1970s and no longer accommodates the space needs of the department, according to Rector. A recent update to the needs assessment done in 2003 considered what the department would look like if the population of Talent was 10,000 people. It recommended the city build a new 5,000-square-foot facility, which would cost an estimated $2 million. “That’s probably way beyond what folks want to pay for it,” Rector said. Councilors rejected the idea to construct new police headquarters. Voters have not supported big-price tag bond options to fund a new civic center and parks improvements in Talent in the past. “I don’t think it’ll fly either, personally,” Mayor Marian Telerski said. “I don’t even want to talk about the higher level,” Councilor Don Steyskal said. The alternative — an addition to the current facility — would add space on the south end of the building and serve the department for a decade or more. The bond money would also pay to tear down the old city hall, which will be replaced by a new 7,596-square-foot building to house all city offices. The city of Talent and the Talent Urban Renewal Agency partnered to build the new city offices on city land with urban renewal funding.
