He couldn’t be picked out of a crowd by 99 percent of Americans. Even the president claims he doesn’t know who he is. Yet, he sat behind Laura Bush during the president’s state of the union address in 2004. President Bush and former president Bill Clinton have each allocated tens of millions of dollars through the CIA directly to him. He convinced congress, the NSA, the Pentagon and the American people that the U.S. needed to invade Iraq immediately because Saddam had WMDs. When he speaks, the highest levels of the U.S. government listen closely. Forget Bush. Disregard Cheney for the moment. And just ignore Rumsfeld and Powell altogether. Think about the man behind them all pulling the strings. CASE IN POINT (OPED) Updated Mondays: — CASE IN POINT Hold on to the story of ‘Night’ Much in the news of late has been the brouhaha regarding the memoir, “A Million Little Pieces,” by James Frey, selected last fall by Oprah Winfrey’s book club. It is a graphic and compelling account of Frey's time in a drug and alcohol rehab center. When Frey’s work was recently vetted by an online investigative Web site, it found that some sections of the book were embellished. Winfrey has since defended Frey saying that "the underlying message of redemption in James Frey’s memoir still resonates with me." The key words in Winfrey’s statement are "the underlying message." As if to make her point regarding the synergistic impact of a memoir, Winfrey recently announced that the book club's most recent selection is the memoir, "Night," written by Elie Wiesel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. It is the account of his experience in the Nazi death camps during WWII. It is a courageous and important choice. The Chautauqua movement was begun in America by the Rev. John Heyl Vincent in 1874. Like millions of others of his countrymen, Vincent was appalled by the horrors of the Civil War. No one had imagined at the outset that such a war could have been so bloody. One United States Congressman had said on the floor of the House that he did not fear such a conflict.
