--> --> May 4: AHS has new girls basketball coach, await boys coach By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings The new Ashland High girls basketball coach has been determined, the boys coaching position is still up in the air and a formal announcement naming both will be made May 13, AHS Athletic Director Jim Nagel said Friday. Nagel previously had said the announcement would come Monday, but those plans were scrapped when he remembered a series of meetings scheduled for this week with the Oregon School Activities Association. Nagel also will be taking personal time to watch his son graduate from the University of San Diego. Three candidates were vying for the girls position, including assistant coach Jeff Fuller and longtime Ashland sixth, seventh and eighth grade tournament team coach Steve Humann. None of the girls coach applicants were on-staff teachers, which is significant because the school is required by contract to hire staff members who apply and are determined to be qualified. The boys coaching job is still up in the air, Nagel said, because one of the applicants is an on-staff teacher. There were "half a dozen" other non-staff applicants as well, Nagel said. To be determined is whether the on-staff applicant is qualified. The definition of qualified may also prove critical. Said Nagel: "We're hoping we set the standards for qualifications. Grizz 8-1, Pelicans 0-3 KLAMATH FALLS - Ashland High's softball team ended its playoff run Friday afternoon with a split-decision against Klamath Union. The Grizzlies (13-11, 5-7) poured it on to the Pelicans (1-11 SOC) in the opener, winning big, 8-0. The Grizz had nine hits in the opener, and junior pitcher Megan Beugli pitched a five-strikeout, two-walk shutout. In the nightcap the Grizz stranded too many baserunners, and were stung by a two-run error in the fourth inning, en route to a 3-1 defeat. Grizz head coach Rich Beugli thought his team suffered a letdown in Game 2. "The girls kind of assumed they were going to win," Beugli said. "And they didn't get it done. KU scrapped and fought - they didn't have a conference win - and they wanted to win it more." The Grizz end their regular season next Saturday when AHS plays the Eagle Point Eagles on the road. Beugli said the playoffs are out of reach for the Grizz. "We are playing for nothing but pride next week against Eagle Point," he said. Email your...
