The Grizzlies won the game 8-2 to improve their position in the league playoff race. Ashland next faces off against South Medford, next Saturday at the RRRink. Photos by Orville Hector | Ashland Daily Tidings The rout at The RRRink was another step forward in securing a Grizzly playoff birth, but what head coach Michael Mahlstadt was really excited about after the game was the effort. "We had some players who had career days out there," Mahlstadt said. "We are playing at another level right now and that is really exciting. We are in mid-season and you can just really tell that the effort is there." Two players who defined "career day" for AHS were Stephen McLaughlin and Cody Schoonover. McLaughlin picked up a hat trick and two assists in the Ashland victory. Two goals were earned on effort alone when he collected deflected shots and put points up with second efforts. The third goal was attributed to a successful offensive scheme and crisp passing by the Grizzly forwards. McLaughlin not only benefited from the passing however, he also distributed the puck and picked up two assists - one to Tiffany Schoonover with 20 seconds left in the first and another to Robby Bruce late in the second. Cody Schoonover found the net once in each period: at 9:35 in the first, 10:05 in the second and off of a penalty shot in the third. The first two goals came off of unassisted breakaways up the ice. The hat-trick was delayed momentarily after he was tripped from behind on another breakaway with 9:08 remaining. On the ensuing penalty shot, Schoonover caught K-Union Goalie Ben Hobbs guessing the wrong way and dished a lazy shot into an open net. Schoonover's principle roll isn't to attack, however. He is a starting defender, and he made his presence known. Schoonover spent most of the game in the mix defensively, finding ways to thwart what few attacks K-Falls could muster and helping his goalie, David Jacobson-Fried, on his own route to a big game. "David had a great game in the net," Mahlstadt said of his goalie, who had 18 saves. "Performances like his are going to keep our team rolling. We have Cody coming up big for us and Stephen is really playing well right now. Everyone is really improving." That improvement will be needed in order for the Grizzlies to finish the season strong. While Ashland currently sits second in the standings, there are still six weeks left in the regular season and the Grizzlies know that each game counts. "You cant overlook anyone in the league," Mahlstadt said. "You have some tough teams in there. Crater has a good team and of course there is North Medford. Even though we won't see North until the playoffs, we need to keep the quality play up and ride that into our next meeting." The Grizzlies will attempt to keep the quality level high next Saturday, when they face-off with South Medford for the second time this season. The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. at The RRRink.
